Over the course of the year, Vermont Design Works has been partnering with the Vermont Gleaning Collective, an initiative started by Salvation Farms, on a fresh design and other functionality enhancements for their website and web application. This new look has launched, marking the beginning of a new gleaning season and a kick-start for recruiting new volunteers.
The Vermont Gleaning Collective is comprised of several organizations throughout the state of Vermont including Rutland Area Farm and Food Link, The Intervale Center, Community Harvest of Central Vermont, Healthy Roots Collaborative, HOPE, and of course Salvation Farms. Together, these organizations coordinate gleaning events around the state where they work with volunteers to reap unmarketed crops from farms to reduce waste, educate eaters, and feed more vulnerable members of the community.
Some of the functionality for their website and web application includes a calendar of events and registration capabilities; a social media feed that pulls content from facebook, twitter, and instagram from all of their Member Organizations based on a hashtag; and an admin facing system used interact with their database of volunteers/participating farm locations/recipient sites, send email notifications, and schedule new events that get pushed to their website's homepage. This web application also keeps track of which volunteers are participating in Collective events and has a platform for exchanging comments and messages between Member Organizations and volunteers.
